A Day of Thanksgiving

A Day of Thanksgiving

Produced: 1951

Length: 13 Minutes

This touching vintage film begins in the living room of the Johnsons, the classic 1950s nuclear family. The household, however, is suffering hardships and can no longer afford to provide the typical Thanksgiving feast that their children are accustomed to. But with heavy emphasis on patriotic themes, the parents try to make their children appreciate the things they have. For instance: the right to suffrage, their family, and the luxuries that living in America provides them. Eventually, the children begin to realize that they do have much to be grateful for and they all enjoy the humble meal together. Uncommon for a patriotic film in the 1950s, the point of the film is not the accumulation of wealth but the appreciation of what one has.

Let’s Talk Turkey

Produced: 1960

Length: 22 Minutes

A captivating snapshot of the changing history of food production and availability, Lets Talk Turkey is a top notch vintage food industry film. While once considered just a meal for holidays or special occasions (prior to 1960), with the advent of modern farming and production methods, turkey can now be an every day food. Gone are the hours of tedious labor incurred by going to the butcher and dressing the turkey yourself, so the film promises. Now, a fresh frozen turkey can be bought in your grocers frozen food section, ready for preparation. This incredible advance in food preparation made life easier for homemakers, and its easy to forget that the universally and consistently available food supply has not always been a part of American life.

Poultry on the Farm

Poultry on the Farm

Produced: 1930s

Length: 11 Minutes

Poultry on the Farm provides an excellent overview of the development and care of chickens, ducks, geese, and turkeys. Each type of bird has its own section in the film and different stages of growth are shown for each type. The film documents chicken eggs in incubation machinery, including several views of the different stages of embryonic development. Then, the newly hatched chicks go to live in the brooder house. Mother ducks and geese are shown with their chicks as well. There is some discussion about the birds different beak shapes and how theyve evolved to fit various environments. This film is an enriching historical look at livestock farming techniques as well as all the processing and industry that comes with it.

Carving Magic

Carving Magic

Produced: 1960s

Length: 21 Minutes

Carving Magic, a strangely comedic video, explains how to correctly carve any type of meat using the right type of knife. But the entertainment value comes not from the instructional aspects, but from the highly regarded comedic actors (namely the great Harvey Korman!) who chide one another for not being able to carve well! The absurd dialogue and behavior continues, clearly being played for laughs though subtly, making this a funky and funny old movie. Carving Magic is stuff full of delicious culture and characters, all centered around the basics of proper meat carving.
