Science In Action: Glaciers

Science In Action: Glaciers

Produced: 1958

Length: 10 Minutes

Glaciers, rivers of ice that coat the most extreme areas of the two hemispheres, is the topic for this informative film produced by the California Academy of Sciences. In a television series called Science in Action, Dr. Hubbard attempts to explain different aspects of glaciers, how they form and what makes them tick. A famed priest, Father Herbert, one of the earliest Alaskan glacier explorers and scientists, is his guest and together they perform experiments demonstrating the power of a glacier and how they form from snow falling and crushing together over a long period. With global warming issues at work in our world learning about glaciers is even more pivotal today than it ever was. This 1950s film is an engrossing look at the brilliance of our organic world and science at its best, that is, science in action.

Alaska: A Modern Frontier

Produced: 1948

Length: 10 Minutes

Alaska. Not just a place of extreme colds, barren snow swept lands and unforgiving landscapes, but a place of diverse culture and environment. Alaska: A Modern Frontier, takes all the misconceptions about Alaska and its inhabitants and corrects these notions explaining how Alaska has many landscapes that are comparable to New York or Seattle in climate with diverse people that are populating the land in modern houses with modern technology. Filmed during the time Alaska was new to the United States, the narrator is quick to explain the benefits of having it as a new state, such as oil, and plenty of opportunity for agricultural growth. An attempt at explaining how the vast land of Alaska will only benefit the United States, this film also includes some spectacular shots of Alaska via car and plane.
